Simple Tips for Choosing Outfits That Shine on Camera
Let’s be real; planning outfits for family photos can feel like an Olympic sport. Between wrangling toddlers, coordinating colours, and avoiding that one shirt your 5 year old insists on wearing (you know the one), it can be a LOT. But don’t stress! With a little guidance (and maybe a snack break), we can turn outfit planning into something that actually feels fun.
Here’s your go-to guide to looking and feeling amazing for your next family photo session; whether it's a cozy mini or a full golden-hour glow-fest.
Start with Mom’s Outfit (Yes, Really!)
Mom, you deserve to feel amazing in these photos; so start with what makes you feel good. Choose something you’re comfortable in, that flatters your shape, and fits the vibe you want (soft and flowy? classic and tailored?). Once you’ve nailed down your look, you can build everyone else’s outfits around it.
Coordinate, Don’t Match
Gone are the days of identical white shirts and jeans, or red and black buffalo plaid (phew!). Instead, think coordinated colour palettes. Choose 2–3 main tones and 1–2 neutrals. Earthy tones, soft pastels, and muted colours photograph beautifully and work year-round.
Winning Colour Combos:
- Rust, olive, cream, and mustard
- Navy, blush, grey, and soft denim
- Dusty blue, pink or sage, tan, and ivory
- Warm browns, oatmeal, and forest green
What to Avoid:
- Neon - they stand out (not in a good way) and can cause colour casting making skin look less natural
- Large logos or writing (we want the focus to be on the connection not what's written on dad's shirt)
- Busy patterns/large florals - they can distract from your beautiful faces.
Mix Textures and Layers
Mixing materials like denim, lace, knits, and linen adds visual interest and depth to your photos without needing bold prints. Don't be afraid to layer with vests, cardigans, tights, or scarves (especially helpful in cooler months!) for a cozy, lived-in look.
Dress for the Season and the Setting
If we're shooting outdoors consider the location you have selected when planning you're outfits. If we’re in a prairie field, soft flowing dresses or warm knits work beautifully. For urban backdrops, you can lean into a more modern, or a slightly dressier look.
Quick tip: Make sure your footwear makes sense! Runners can be cute and casual but leave the Crocs and flip-flops at home; unless they’re part of your family’s signature style 😉 If w're doing a winter session try to avoid bulky snow boots. I know that's easier said than done especially for little ones but bringing a pair of shoes along we can slip into will help achieve the look you want.
For Indoor at home Lifestyle sessions
For an indoor lifestyle session, choose outfits that feel comfortable, reflect your personality, and complement your home’s style and colours. Soft, neutral tones or muted earthy shades tend to photograph beautifully and keep the focus on you rather than your clothing. Add texture with cozy knits, linen, or layers. Since indoor lighting is often softer, lighter colours can help brighten your photos, while subtle pops of colour can add warmth and interest. Most importantly, wear something you can move and relax in so your images feel natural and authentic.
For Indoor studio sessions
Since studio lighting is controlled and flattering, you can play with bolder colours or sleek textures like silk, denim, or tailored knits without worrying about harsh shadows. Keep accessories minimal and choose well-fitted pieces that make you feel confident and comfortable, as good posture and ease will shine through in your photos.
Hair + Makeup: Natural, but Elevated
You don’t need a full glam squad, but a little extra time can go a long way on camera.
Hair: Go for what feels like you, but polished. Soft waves, a neat ponytail, or even a messy bun (the intentional kind) can all work great. If you’re considering a haircut or new colour, try to do it at least a week before.
Makeup: A light touch of foundation or tinted moisturizer, a bit of blush, mascara, and a lip tint is all you need. If you’re hiring a makeup artist, opt for soft glam that still looks like you. And yes, setting spray is your best friend.
