How to Look Natural and Relaxed in Family Photos

We’ve all been there, standing in front of the camera, suddenly not sure what to do with our hands, how to smile, or where to look. The good news? Family photos don’t have to feel stiff or awkward. In fact, they’re at their best when you’re relaxed and just being you! Here are a few simple tips to help you look (and feel) natural in your next family photo session:

1. Let Go of Any Expectations

I get it, this one is tough, even for me as a photographer I struggle when my own kids don't cooperate and won't give me that one perfect smiling shot. But by letting go of your expectations on what the perfect family photo should look like you leave yourself open to creating a family photo that is more natural and uniquely you and often times better than what you had expected anyway.

2. Focus on Each Other, Not the Camera

Instead of staring straight into the lens the whole time, look at your kids, your partner, or even hold hands and laugh together. This makes your photos feel authentic and full of life.

3. Wear Comfortable, Confidence-Boosting Clothes

Choose outfits you feel good in, clothes that fit well, allow you to move easily, and reflect your style. When you feel comfortable, it shows in your body language.

4. Keep Moving

Walk together, play with your kids, twirl your little one, or snuggle close. Movement helps you forget the camera is even there and breathes life to your photos. So while it may feel awkward or chaotic when I ask you to skip holding hands or ask your kids in a circle in the midst of that chaos is usually the perfect shot.

5. Don’t Stress About Perfection

Kids might wiggle, hair might blow in the wind, and that’s okay - it’s real life. Some of the best photos come from unexpected, unscripted moments. If there's a baby drool bubble or you have stray hair that really bugs you in your end result then photoshop to the rescue! I can worry about those things after so you don't have to in the moment.

6. Practice Relaxed Posture

Take a deep breath, drop your shoulders, and keep your body loose. Avoid locking your knees or forcing poses. When it doubt, shake it out... literally! Sometimes taking a deep breath and having a little wiggle helps relieve any tension and leaves you looking more natural and relaxed.

7. Laugh (Even If You Have to Fake It at First!)

A little laugh—real or pretend—loosens everyone up and usually leads to genuine smiles. Fake it 'til you make it am I right? So tell a funny story, make a silly face at your kids, or just laugh at how awkward it feels. If all else fails, fart noises aren't just for kids, they can make everyone laugh.

At the end of the day it boils down to trusting your photographer and choosing the right one for you and your family. I'm here to guide you, and capture your family as you are. You get to focus on yourself, without worrying if kids are looking at me and smiling. Family photos are about connection, not perfection. When you focus on enjoying the moment with the people you love, you’ll look natural without even trying. So, relax, have fun, and let your real selves shine, it’s those genuine moments that you’ll treasure for years to come.

So here’s to muddy boots, tight hugs, and memories worth framing.

See you at your next session!
