Fresh 48 vs. Posed Newborn vs. Lifestyle Newborn: Which Is Right for You?

If you're expecting a baby you've probably started thinking about all the ways you want to remember those first few days. The tiny fingers. The sleepy stretches. The way your newborn curls into your chest. The first time an older sibling meets their new baby.

Those moments are fleeting, which is why newborn photography is about so much more than simply taking pretty pictures. It's about preserving a little piece of what life felt like when your baby was brand new.

At Wildhood Photo, I offer three different types of newborn sessions: Fresh 48, posed newborn, and lifestyle newborn photography. Each one captures this season in a different way, and there really isn't a wrong choice.

So, how do you know which session is right for your family?

Let's break it down.

Fresh 48: Capturing the First Days, the Very Start of a New Story

A Fresh 48 session takes place within the first 48 hours after your baby arrives, typically while you're still in the hospital or birthing centre.

These sessions are focused on documenting the realness of those first hours. The hospital room. The tiny hospital bracelet. Your baby's first yawns. The sleepy cuddles. The overwhelming joy (and maybe a little bit of exhaustion!) that comes with meeting your baby for the first time.

Fresh 48 photography is natural and documentary-inspired. Rather than creating elaborate poses or setups, I focus on the moments that are actually happening.

You might be holding your baby skin-to-skin, your partner might be soaking in their first cuddles, or an older sibling might be meeting the newest member of the family for the very first time.

These are the details that can be surprisingly easy to forget and incredibly meaningful to look back on.

A Fresh 48 session may be perfect for you if:

  • You want to remember the hospital or birth-center experience.
  • You love natural, documentary-style photographs.
  • You want to capture your baby's very first hours and days.
  • You want images of the tiny details that change so quickly.
  • You'd like to include siblings and grandparents meeting the baby for the first time.

There is something incredibly powerful about a photograph that takes you straight back to those first moments with your new baby as your start your story together.

Posed Newborn Sessions: Tiny Details & Beautifully Curated Images

Posed newborn photography is what many people picture when they think of a traditional newborn session.

These sessions typically take place during the first few weeks of life, when babies are still very sleepy and naturally curl into those sweet newborn poses. My ideal age is 7-14 days old with around 10 days old being the sweet spot.

During a posed session, I carefully position your baby in a variety of poses, often using beautiful wraps, blankets, props, and styled setups. The result is a collection of timeless, polished images focused on your baby's tiny features.

These sessions are all about baby and while they can include one or two images with siblings the focus is on baby, and all their sweet perfect details.

A posed newborn session may be perfect for you if:

  • You love beautifully styled, classic newborn portraits.
  • You want lots of images focused on your baby's tiny details.
  • You enjoy wraps, textures, colors, and carefully curated setups.
  • You want artwork that feels timeless and polished.
  • You'd like a variety of poses and setups in your final gallery.

One of the wonderful things about posed newborn photography is that it allows us to slow down and really focus on all those little details you'll want to remember, the eyelashes, button nose, tiny lips, and impossibly small toes.

Lifestyle Newborn Sessions: Your Family, Just As You Are

Lifestyle newborn photography is a little different. Instead of focusing on carefully posed setups, lifestyle sessions document your family interacting naturally in your home or another meaningful environment. You might be cuddled together on the couch, rocking your baby in the nursery, reading a book with an older sibling, or simply soaking up those quiet newborn moments. The goal for these sessions isn't perfection. It's connection.

Lifestyle sessions are often relaxed and flexible, allowing your baby to be photographed naturally, whether they're wide awake, peacefully sleeping, feeding, being held, or needing a little extra cuddling.

A lifestyle newborn session may be perfect for you if:

  • You want your photographs to feel natural and authentic.
  • You love candid moments more than traditional poses.
  • Your home is meaningful to your family's story.
  • You want to focus on the connection between parents, siblings, and baby.
  • You want photographs that capture what life actually felt like during those first weeks.

Years from now, you may not remember exactly what your living room looked like, but seeing yourself sitting in that same room with your newborn in your arms can bring those memories rushing back.

So, Which Newborn Session Should You Choose?

There really isn't one right answer. Each type of session tells a different part of your baby's story.

Fresh 48 captures the beginning; the hospital bracelets, the first cuddles, and the overwhelming emotions of meeting your baby.

Posed Newborn focuses on your baby's tiny features and creates beautifully styled, timeless portraits.

Lifestyle Newborn captures the connection, love, and everyday moments that make your family uniquely yours.

And if you love more than one style, you don't necessarily have to choose just one! Some families choose a Fresh 48 session to document those first hours and then schedule a newborn session once they're home.

The Most Important Thing? Capturing This Season.

Your baby won't always be this tiny. The sleepy stretches, tiny fingers wrapped around yours, newborn snuggles, and little noises that fill your home are all temporary. Before you know it, your baby will be smiling, sitting, crawling, and growing into their own little personality. Whether you choose a Fresh 48, posed newborn, or lifestyle session, the most important thing is having photographs that bring you back to this season of your family's life.

Because these aren't just photographs of your baby. They're photographs of you becoming a family; and that is something worth remembering.
