Should You Bring Your Dog to Your Family Photos?
If you’ve ever found yourself wondering whether your four-legged family member should join in on your next family photo session, my answer, as a photographer (and self-proclaimed dog enthusiast) is almost always a joyful YES. But before you grab the leash and dog treats, let’s talk about what makes bringing pets to a session magical… and when it might be best to leave them at home.
Why I Love Including Dogs in Family Sessions
Dogs bring a level of authenticity and connection to photos that’s hard to replicate. They have zero interest in “posing” perfectly, which is exactly what makes them perfect. Their goofy grins, wagging tails, and genuine affection for their people add so much life to your images.
If you’re anything like me, your dog isn’t just a pet, they’re part of the family. Including them in your photos tells the full story of your life right now. Years down the road, you’ll look back at those images and remember not just what your family looked like, but what it felt like to have your pup right there in the thick of it.
When Bringing Your Pet Works Best
To make sure your session is fun (and not stressful), here are a few things to consider before deciding:
- Location Matters – Outdoor locations usually work best for pets, especially dogs. There’s more space to move around, and natural light helps keep things relaxed.
- Your Dog’s Personality – If your pup is comfortable around new people and can handle a bit of excitement, they’ll likely enjoy the session.
- Help is Helpful – If possible, bring along a friend or family member who can take your dog for a walk or home once we’ve finished their part of the shoot. That way, we can focus on a mix of photos with and without them.
- Prep Ahead – A little exercise before the session can help burn off extra energy. And yes, please bring their favourite treats — bribery is 100% encouraged.
When It Might Be Better to Skip It
Sometimes, leaving your dog at home really is the kindest choice. If your pup is very anxious around strangers, easily overwhelmed, or if the location isn’t safe or pet-friendly, it’s perfectly okay to plan a separate session just for them at a spot they feel comfortable.
My Promise as Your Photographer
If you choose to bring your dog, know that I’m all in. I’ll happily get muddy knees, dodge slobbery kisses, and squeak a toy behind the camera if that’s what it takes to get the shot. For me, photographing dogs is pure joy — because they’re not just extras in your story, they’re part of the heart of it.
So, should you bring your pet to your family photo shoot? If it feels right for your family (fur included) — absolutely. Let’s make memories you’ll treasure, paw prints and all.
Here’s to wagging tails, happy families, and photos you’ll treasure forever. 🐾
